The second project is development of the Uzbek branch of the satellite link to the Internet known as the Virtual Silk Highway. NATO began funding a basic computer network for the academic community of Uzbekistan in 1998 and further funding was later provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and George Soros's Open Society organisation. The extension of this basic network for satellite-based connectivity to the European GEANT and beyond will first serve 27 Local Area Networks, 400 dial-up users, and some 800 PCs. The Virtual Silk Highway should officially open in July 2002 as the first batch of equipment was delivered on June 13.
